In May of 2020 I began my position at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) as an Associate Instructional Consultant. It’s been incredibly rewarding for me to work in Instructional Design & Technology while continuing to work on my master’s degree.
CNM was in the process of migrating from Blackboard Learn learning management system to D2L Brightspace, so creating instructional materials for faculty and students was high priority. First, of course, I had to learn Brightspace myself.
Among other work duties, I am part of the Student Onboarding Team, and as part of that effort, a coworker and I thought it would be fun to create a scavenger hunt for students to explore the new learning environment more deeply than what the Jump Start tutorial provides.
We were able to incentivize by offering a limited number of small scholarships and parking permits as prizes.
What resulted was a full-blown course with nearly 800 students enrolled. Not only did most participants find it fun and helpful, it was enormously educational for me, and I am currently in the process of revising it for a second roll-out.
